East Gippsland Water replaced its existing generator and heat pumps with a 2G 80kW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) solution, designed to supply the plant’s electrical demand, meet all thermal requirements of the digesters, and export excess energy to the grid.
To support its goal of reaching 100% renewable energy by 2025 and net zero emissions by 2050, East Gippsland Water engaged Evo Energy Technologies to deliver a CHP solution at the Bairnsdale Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The project involved installation of a 2G Agenitor 80kW CHP unit, which uses biogas from the site’s anaerobic digestion process to generate electricity and heat. The system now powers the plant, provides all required thermal energy for the digesters, and exports surplus energy to the grid.
The CHP unit is expected to produce around 500MWh annually—enough to power 98 average Australian homes—while offsetting approximately 485 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
This project is part of East Gippsland Water’s broader emissions reduction plan, contributing to a 44% reduction by 2025 and supporting their long-term climate goals.
